THE GOALS AND THE OBJECTIVES OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS CENTER

Center for Communication Skills named after D. Draper has been in existence since 2010, by the decision of the Academic Council in 2012 the center was named after Juliet Draper of Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov.

The main goal of the Center is the consistent formation of communicative competence in the conditions of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education, as well as an assessment of the communicative competence of a graduate.

Within the framework of academic activities, the main mission of the Communication Skills Center is to improve the communicative competence of a teacher of medical organizations, professional mastery of the theory and practice of communication skills, the activation of a systematic approach in understanding the psychotherapeutic structure of interpersonal interaction, the adequate application of knowledge and communication skills, the acquisition of experience in organizing effective professional interaction.

As part of the educational activities of the CCN, the main goals and objectives are — Formation of an assessment of the communicative competence of the graduate by integrating and developing communication skills in the educational process.

Important: Implementation and adherence to a systematic assessment of the communicative competence of a graduate, carried out while maintaining a consistent structure of the development of communication skills from basic to specialized, adequate application of knowledge and development of communication skills as part of the student’s educational program and improving the quality of services provided.

The Center’s specialists participated in the implementation of 3 state-important projects of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, being members of the working group:

Educational expert project “Additional immunization in the KZ”, supervised by WHO, as well as the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Educational and expert project «Modernization of medical education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan», in particular, «Development of medical ethics and communication skills among teachers of clinical departments, doctors, psychologists, social workers

The mhGAP-IG Mental Health Gap Regional Project, supervised by WHO, as well as the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Center’s specialists participate in the project “Development of the competencies of the teachers of KazNMU”.

The main direction of the Center is to develop communicative competence among administrative and managerial staff and the teaching staff of clinical and theoretical departments:

Since 2015, in the framework of the project «Modernization of medical education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan» he has been supervising, organizing and conducting training under the program «Development of medical ethics and communication skills among teachers of clinical departments.

Since 2016, integrating the international experience of the graduate’s communicative competency assessment system, the Center has been preparing a standardized patient and participating in the implementation of GA and IGA with assessing the communication skills of students and interns of KazNMU.

Trainers annually conduct training on the development of communicative competence as one of the key competencies of the teacher and medical specialist.

Over the years, interest in the problem of the professional and communicative competence of a doctor has been increasing. This is characterized by an understanding of the multiplicity of etiological components (biological, psychological and social), cause of the disease, as well as the level of provided medical services to the consumer.

The communicative competence of the doctor is considered as the art of communicating with the patient and the patient’s relatives, as well as with colleagues, and is formed by students, receiving the first experience of communication as a patient, and only after that, carrying out professional activities as part of medical practice, or as a teacher.

In the process of training, the ability to build trust-based relationships, receiving the necessary (important) information, differentiating and summarizing, understanding of the principles of communication increases and leads to the responsibility of achieving mutual decisions. The above said things allows you to increase the level of communicative competence of a specialist in medical and non-medical fields.

The center has been working on the formation and development of communication skills since 2010, and since 2015, as part of the project «Modernization of medical education and science of the Republic of Kazakhstan»

The main direction of the Center is to develop communicative competence among administrative and managerial staff and the teaching staff of clinical and theoretical departments, as well as to contribute to the formation of an assessment of the communicative skills of a student, a KazNMU graduate.

Trainers annually conduct training on the development of communicative competence as one of the key competencies of the teacher and medical specialist.

The level of communicative competence of the teacher affects the effectiveness of the entire educational process, solving global problems of the whole range of tasks of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in particular the quality of determining the satisfaction of the provision of educational and medical services to the population.

Planning the process to develop communicative competence, the set levels and requirements for the necessary knowledge and sufficient to achieve the corresponding result are established.

The Center’s specialists who are part of the working group to create the “KazNMU Teacher Competency Model”, who are trainers and experts in communication skills, have developed and implemented internal programs that increase the teacher’s communicative competence: “Basic communication skills in the teaching and educational process”, “Trainer expert in communicative skills ”,“ Standardized Patient in the System of Medical Education ”,“ Communicative Skills as a Way of Management in a Conflict ”, the authors of which are: professor doctor of medicine Asimov Marat Abubakrievich; Candidate of psychological and pedagogical sciences KupeevAyanRyspaevich, master of medicine DoschanovDaurenKhizatovich, specialist in psychology and pedagogy Mizonova Svetlana Nikolaevna.

Since 2019, stress management has been carried out: «Communicative skills in stress management.»

Participation as experts in projects, seminars, training

Communicative competence in the formation of a physician’s personality is considered in a complex of cognitive, emotional and behavioral characteristics and promotes high-quality contact with patients and their relatives, as well as in transferring professional knowledge and communication skills.

As a part of ensuring the improvement of the quality of medical services, the need of the entire Kazakhstani community to develop medical ethics and communication skills of medical workers is being realized (Roadmap of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2016-2019, signed by E. Birtanov).

As a part of the development of communicative competence, the experience of domestic teachers (Asimov M. A., Bagiyarova F. A., Mardanova Sh. S., MadalievS. Kh., Doshchanov D. Kh., Sarsenova L.K.) and foreign experts are being studied (D. Draper, M. Buber, M. Bakhtin, H.-G. Gadamer and K. Jaspers, R. Rigelman, A. Garber, K. Reshke …)

Training with international and native specialists

 

Starting from 2015, and to the current 2019-2020 academic year, the significance of the center’s activities is reinforced by participation in the project “Modernization of Medical Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan 2020-2030”, as well as the implementation of the Road Map of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the theme: “Development of medical ethics and communication skills” for teachers of clinical departments, doctors, all medical and non-medical workers. Having received qualification of trainers, the center’s specialists continue to study and participate in the development of continuing communication skills training programs during pre- and postgraduate training of specialists of all profiles.

The center’s specialists participate in the preparation and conducting the Final state certification with the assessment of communication skills — students, interns, doctoral students, solving the task of making the final assessment of the communicative competence of the graduate of KazNMU.

Clinical experts were involved in the final certification assessment of students’ practical and communicative skills.
